Rufus clearly was on the used side when he was lured into becoming a bounty hunter by Tristan. Tristan said that a great sum of money could revive Rufus’ mother.

As the Queen of the Underworld took over the council, Tristan quickly lost his support. Pressured by the situation, Tristan forced a rookie bounty hunter, Rufus, into a fight with the necromancer.
